Who is Family Weekend For?

Family Weekend is intended for families who have a member with an intellectual and/or developmental disability. We encourage participants of all ages to attend this conference and be encouraged by each other. In a recent study, more than half of parents of a child with disabilities reported not attending a religious event or activity due to not having supports in place for their child. We want to change that. This conference is planned specifically to tend to the various needs of our participants. Our team is working hard to create an environment that serves our participants’ sensory processing needs, medication needs, food allergies, and more. Trained volunteers will be available throughout the weekend to assist families and provide respite during breakout sessions.

What are breakout groups like?

We have four breakout groups on Saturday. The groups are for parents/guardians, special needs participants, young siblings, and teen-adults siblings. Each group will have a different focus and trained volunteers.

How will our needs be met?

Our hospitality team is committed to making this weekend fun, encouraging, and refreshing. We’re dedicated to being proactive towards the needs of our family members. From med fridges, sensory friendly planning, trained helpers, and more, we are ready to make this a great experience for all family members.

How long is the training? What can I expect?

The training lasts about 90 minutes. We will do a presentation with tips and tricks for creating inclusive classrooms, an interactive positive behavior management training, and be available for questions or further discussion afterwards.

Some of my children's/youth volunteers don't feel equipped to handle the behavioral needs of children with disabilities

We understand this fear, we hear it a lot! It's important to remember also that any child can have behavioral challenges at times. Our training walks you through a step by step positive behavior management training to give you tools to help each student be successful in your ministry. We'll teach you de-escalation techniques, redirection tips, and help you feel prepared for any situation.

My church wants to welcome people with disabilities but we don't have the resources to start a whole new ministry. What can we do?

Focus on creating inclusion in the ministries you already have! Our ministry training provides tips to create inclusive classrooms and lessons that serve the needs of all children and adults.

Can a person with intellectual disabilities know God and understand the gospel?

We believe so! The same God who created the universe, is the same God that created each one of us. We trust that God knows how to capture the hearts of all of His creation and wants a personal relationship with every person. Because we are confident in this, we are also convicted to be missionaries that make sure people with intellectual disabilities are presented the Gospel in ways that are engaging and inclusive to them.

How do small groups work?

Small groups are a unique way for campers to discuss what they learned during sessions and engage in interactive activities to better understand. Small groups are made based on camper's understanding of faith as answered in the application.

How do you provide for adapted learning?

Campers are given camper booklets with different options for interactive note taking. Counselors sit among campers during lessons and help adapt and explain lessons on the spot as needed.
